Cleynen E. et al. (2025) Mortality and barriers to healthcare among people experiencing homelessness in Paris: a mixed-methods study. International Journal for Equity in Health 24:356 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12939-025-02695-w
Background Homelessness is a global problem with significant public health implications. Persons experiencing homelessness (PEH) face poorer health outcomes and elevated risks of premature death compared to the general population. This is also true for PEH in France, despite the country’s system of universal health coverage. This study investigates 10-year mortality patterns among PEH in Paris and barriers to accessing healthcare.
Caiti E, Hasbroucq S. & Grégoire J.C. (2025) Natural-history traits suspected behind interspecific variations of bark- and wood-boring beetles in response to trap size and design. Scientific Reports (2025) 15:34272 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-025-16511-6
The performances of traps used for pest monitoring are not well understood. Variable trap sizes and shapes make cross-comparisons difficult. We tested with four Scolytinae species (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) a set of traps of the same model (fan-traps) in four sizes (310, 536, 832.5, 1,200 cm2), and a larger trap with another design (a four-vane trap, 4,500 cm2). A significantly linear relationship was observed between trap sizes and catches for Pityogenes chalcographus, but theccatches of Ips typographus, Trypodendron lineatum and T. signatum tapered off.
Gressani O. & Hens N. Nonparametric serial interval estimation with uniform mixtures. PLOS Computational Biology 21(8): e1013338. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pcbi.1013338
The serial interval of an infectious disease is a key instrument to understand transmission dynamics. Estimation of the serial interval distribution from illness onset data extracted from transmission pairs is challenging due to the presence of censoring and state-of-the-art methods mostly rely on parametric models. We present a fully data-driven methodology to estimate the serial interval distribution based on interval-censored serial interval data.
Bos, M. et a. (2025) Objectivising Heritage Assessment with Values: Criteria-Based Grid and Constructivist Approach. Heritage, vol. 8, issue 4, nr 116.
The concept of value seems to have capital importance both in the scientific literature and in various heritage actors’ professional discourse. The actions undertaken to develop the built environment inherited from previous generations seem to depend on thevalue we assign it. In this essay, the concepts of value, assessor, and heritage assessment are discussed. Two historical contexts are compared: the classical axiology of the 19th century based on the Enlightenment search for rationality and the typologies of contemporary values struggling with complexity.
Van Den Berghe L., De Pauw S. & Vandevelde S. (2025) Pathway insights: exploring profiles and processes of drop-in students in relation to completion rates in second chance education. Frontiers in Psychology Volume 16 - 2025 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2025.1620330
Obtaining an upper secondary degree is highly esteemed for its economic and societal value. For students dropping out of school who return to education to earning an upper secondary degree (cf. high school—ISCED level 3)—termed “drop-in students” in this study—alternative pathways like “Second Chance Education” (SCE) have emerged. Empirical studies on these programs are limited, hindering theoretical progress and the understanding of drop-in students’ psychological and educational processes.
Himschoot L. et al. (2025) et al. Prevalence and clinical correlates of Gardnerella spp., Fannyhessea vaginae, Lactobacillus crispatus and L. iners in pregnant women in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Front. Cell. Infect. Microbiol. 14:1514884. doi: 10.3389/fcimb.2024.1514884
Background: Gardnerella is a key pathogen in bacterial vaginosis (BV), but the role of the different Gardnerella species remains unclear. We investigated the role of four Gardnerella species, as well as Fannyhessea vaginae, Lactobacillus crispatus and L. iners in BV.
Corvilain P. et al. (2025) Pushing the boundaries of MEG based on optically pumped magnetometers towards early human life. Imaging Neuroscience, Vol. 3, https://doi.org/10.1162/imag_a_00489.
Characterizing the early development of the human brain is critical from both fundamental and clinical perspectives. However, existing neuroimaging techniques are either not well suited to infants or have limited spatial or temporal resolution. The advent of optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) has revolutionized magnetoencephalography (MEG) by enabling wearable and thus more naturalistic recordings while maintaining excellent sensitivity and spatiotemporal resolution. Nevertheless, its adaptation to studying neural activity in infancy poses several challenges.
Torres-Huerta A. (2025) Spatiotemporal Control of the Formation of Luminescent Lanthanide Complexes in Liposome-Based Nanoreactors. Angewandte Chemie International Edition e202510471,
doi.org/10.1002/anie.202510471
The controlled mass transfer across compartmentalised environments in synthetic nanoreactors is essential for enhancing precise spatiotemporal manipulation of chemical transformations within confined spaces. In this study, we present a strategy that integrates a synthetic anion transporter in liposome-based nanoreactors, allowing for spatiotemporal control over the formation of metal–organic complexes in liposomes. This approach enables us to effectively modulate the assembly of luminescent lanthanide-benzenedicarboxylate nanostructures.
De Vlieger D. et al. (2025) Speed-dependent changes in the arm swing during independent walking in individuals after stroke. PLoS ONE 20(1): e0315332. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0315332
Background
Increasing one’s walking speed is an important goal in post-stroke gait rehabilitation. Insufficient arm swing in people post-stroke might limit their ability to propel the body forward and increase walking speed.
Purpose
To investigate the speed-dependent changes (and their contributing factors) in the arm swing of persons post-stroke.

Surdi M., Tack P., Lycke S., Schöder S. & De Graef K. (2025) Synchrotron XRF spectroscopy for reading salt-encrusted cuneiform tablets. Scientific Reports 15:3283 | https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-024-84394-0
Cuneiform tablets were a primary writing medium in the ancient Near East from the late fourth millennium BCE to the first century CE. Although these clay tablets were durable for daily use, prolonged burial over millennia has made them vulnerable to salt damage. Fluctuations in temperature and humidity cause the migration of salts to the surface of the tablets, damaging them and covering the inscriptions, making the text unreadable.
Heller M.P.,Ori F. & ASerantes A. (2025) Temporal Entanglement from Holographic Entanglement Entropy. Physical Review X 15, 041022.
Recently, several notions of entanglement in time have emerged as a novel frontier in quantum many body physics, quantum field theory, and gravity. We propose a systematic prescription to characterize temporal entanglement in relativistic quantum field theory in a general state for an arbitrary subregion on a flat, constant time slice in a flat spacetime.
Xinquan Hu (2025) The bacterial and fungal strawberry rootassociated microbiome in reused peat-based substrate. BMC Plant Biology 25:245.
Background Reuse of plant growing substrate can contribute to lowering the carbon footprint of horticulture production systems. Here, we assessed the impact of substrate reusing on the root-associated microbiome of strawberries. The cultivars Elsanta and Malling Centenary were grown in a substrate-based hydroponic system using either fresh peat-based substrate or substrate reused up to three times, with comparisons made between not steamed and steam-treated substrate.
Colon M. (2025) The big passion play in new venture: New insights from a moderated mediation model. European Management Journal.
Research increasingly highlights that more nascent entrepreneurs than once thought, even those passionate about founding a new venture, end up not starting a new business because of the vast challenges. This study provides new insights into how and when passionate nascent founders actually engage in new venture creation behavior. Applying a conditional moderated mediation analysis to a sample of 493 Belgian nascent entrepreneurs, we find that passionate nascent founders develop strategic action plans to reach their desired complex goal of starting a new venture.
Vandendriessche J. et al. (2025) Towards evidence-based biodiversity assessment tools for agroforestry systems. Ecological Solutions and Evidence. http://doi.org/10.1002/2688-8319.70133.
1. Agroforestry can help to conserve biodiversity and enhance multiple ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, microclimate regulation and nutrient cycling. However, in land planning and biodiversity certification schemes it remains difficult to quantify the effect of agroforestry on biodiversity across time and space.
Nothomb N. et al. (2025) Understanding the effect of tailored heat treatment on Zr-modified Al7075 fabricated by laser powder bed fusion. Materials & Design 258, 114553.
Despite high-strength aluminium alloys now being widely processed by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF), a specifically designed heat treatment (HT) for L-PBF Al7075 has yet to be identified and the microstructural -features responsible for strengthening remain to be fully understood. In this study, fully dense Al7075+1.8%Zr was processed without hot cracking. High temperature heat treatments between 350◦C and 525◦C were adopted, attaining the highest hardness (162HV) at 425◦C followed by an artificial ageing (AA).
